Importing into Eritrea from Tunisia: port of Massawa, formalities and payment

MWB TRADING offers importers and companies in Eritrea products from Tunisia for power networks, water and buildings: electrical cables and wires, transformers and MV/LV substations, pipes and fittings, pumps and generator sets, cements and plasters. Goods leave from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax; our offers are made delivered to the port of Massawa, on CFR or CIF terms, in full 20 or 40-foot containers, or as groupage for small volumes.

Public information on importing into Eritrea is scarce: this guide keeps only the points verified for 2025 and 2026. It covers the ports of Massawa and Assab, the state framework for foreign trade, tariff preferences and what to state in your enquiry. Other points, such as import authorisations and product conformity, should be confirmed with your freight forwarder before ordering.

LOGISTICS AND DOCUMENTS

Importing into Eritrea through the port of Massawa

Ports and routes

Massawa, on the Red Sea, is Eritrea’s main port; Assab is the country’s other port. Containers leave from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax, with transhipment depending on the shipping line; the route and the service to Massawa are confirmed in each offer. Onward transport after the port is arranged with your freight forwarder.

Documents and payment

Foreign trade and foreign exchange transactions are under state supervision, and the state regulates import-export trade. Before ordering, ask your freight forwarder to confirm the import authorisations and documents required for your products, and your bank to confirm the possible payment method. MWB prepares the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and technical data sheets.

Inspection and conformity

The national standards body is the Eritrean Standards Institution, a correspondent member of ISO. The certificates required for each product should be confirmed with your freight forwarder. The technical data sheets are attached to our offer; if test reports or certificates are required, say so in your enquiry.

What to specify

References and quantities, standards or certificates required, import authorisations already obtained, planned payment method, delivery point and preferred Incoterm: CFR or CIF to Massawa, or FOB on request.

Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Your questions about importing into Eritrea from Tunisia

Which port should goods enter Eritrea through?

Through Massawa, the country’s main port, on the Red Sea; Assab is the other port. Containers leave from Radès or Sfax with transhipment depending on the shipping line, and the route is confirmed in each offer.

How can an import into Eritrea be paid for?

Through your bank: foreign trade and foreign exchange transactions are regulated by the state. Before ordering, ask your bank to confirm the possible payment method and its timing.

Do the AfCFTA or COMESA give access to preferences?

Not the AfCFTA: according to the latest reports, published in 2025 and 2026, Eritrea is the only African country not to have joined the agreement. Eritrea and Tunisia are both COMESA members, but no COMESA preference for Tunisian origin has been confirmed: check with your freight forwarder. The certificate of origin is one of the documents prepared by MWB.

Is a certificate of conformity required?

The certificates required depend on the product and should be confirmed with your freight forwarder before ordering. The technical data sheets are attached to our offer; if test reports or certificates are required, say so in your enquiry.

Can you group several products or ship a small volume?

Yes. Several product families can be grouped in the same 20 or 40-foot container, and small volumes can travel as sea groupage. For urgent small quantities, air freight from Tunis-Carthage can be considered on request.
