Importing into Benin from Tunisia: a guide to the port of Cotonou

MWB TRADING handles enquiries from importers, distributors and companies in Benin, with supplies from Tunisia: cables and power network equipment, lighting, plaster, white cement, pipes and fittings. Our offers are made delivered to the port of Cotonou, on CFR or CIF terms, from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax.

This guide sets out the verified points for importing into Benin: the electronic cargo tracking note (BESC) required for all cargo discharged at Cotonou, the certificate of conformity for lamps and air conditioners, and what to state in your enquiry. Cotonou already appears in our files: in June 2023, we shipped goods from Radès to Cotonou in transit to Niger.

Ports and routes

Our offers for Benin leave from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax and are made delivered to the port of Cotonou. For delivery inland, state the receiving location: onward transport after the port is assessed separately.

Import documents

All cargo discharged at the port of Cotonou must be covered by an electronic cargo tracking note (BESC); customs require it to accept the declaration. It is prepared from loading in Tunisia. The commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin complete the file; formalities go through the foreign trade single window (GUCE).

Inspection and conformity

Since 30 June 2020, lamps and room air conditioners imported into Benin must meet minimum energy performance standards and carry an energy label. The importer obtains a certificate of conformity from ABERME before ordering; on arrival, customs check that the goods match it. At the port, cargo may also be X-ray scanned under the import verification programme.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Your questions about importing into Benin

Which cargo tracking document is needed for Cotonou?

An electronic cargo tracking note (BESC). All cargo discharged at the port of Cotonou must be covered by one, and customs require it to accept the declaration. It is prepared from loading; your freight forwarder confirms the current procedure.

Are LED lamps checked in Benin?

Yes. Since 30 June 2020, lamps and room air conditioners imported into Benin must carry an energy label and an ABERME certificate of conformity, which the importer requests before ordering. The technical data sheets are attached to our offer.

Which Tunisian port do the goods leave from?

Radès (Tunis) or Sfax, depending on the product and the supplier. The departure port is stated in the offer.

Can you ship small quantities?

Yes, as sea groupage: our offers have already provided for it for PVC fittings, sanitary and plumbing accessories. For larger volumes, we offer full 20 or 40-foot containers.

Can Niger be reached through Cotonou?

In June 2023, we shipped goods bound for Niger from Radès to Cotonou. Since July 2023, the direct Malanville–Gaya crossing between Benin and Niger has been closed; at the end of September 2026, goods discharged at Cotonou reached Niger through a detour via Nigeria. To be confirmed with your freight forwarder.
