Importing into Niger from Tunisia: transit ports, corridors and documents

Niger has no sea access: goods from Tunisia arrive at a transit port, then continue to Niamey by road. Since July 2023, the direct Malanville–Gaya crossing between Benin and Niger has been closed; goods travel notably through the port of Lomé, in Togo, then via Burkina Faso, or through Cotonou, in Benin, with a detour via Nigeria.

MWB TRADING has already shipped to Niger: in June 2023, cables, lighting, wiring devices, pressure-boosting equipment and lightning and fire protection products left Radès (Tunis) for Cotonou, in transit to Niamey; we had also shipped by air from Tunis-Carthage in 2022. A public report shows the 2023 loading.

LOGISTICS AND DOCUMENTS

Shipping to Niger

Ports and routes

Our June 2023 shipment left Radès (Tunis) for Cotonou, in transit to Niamey. Since July 2023, the Malanville–Gaya crossing has been closed; in February 2026, the Kamba corridor in Nigeria reopened for goods discharged at Cotonou. The port of Lomé is the other route, by road via Burkina Faso. At the end of September 2026, no reopening date for the Benin–Niger border had been confirmed.

Import documents

Niger requires its own electronic cargo tracking note (BESC), in addition to that of the transit country: two notes are therefore needed. Via Lomé, the bill of lading must state “Cargo in transit to Niger”. The commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin complete the file.

Inspection and conformity

In 2015, Niger introduced a conformity verification programme for regulated products, with a certificate of conformity required for customs clearance. Its current application and the list of products covered should be confirmed with your freight forwarder before shipment.

What to specify

The list of equipment with references and quantities, cable cross-sections and lengths, luminaire and pump ratings, the preferred transit port, the destination city and the unloading location.

Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Your questions about importing into Niger

Which port do goods for Niger go through?

A transit port, then the road. Our 2023 shipment went through Cotonou; since the Benin–Niger border closed, the road from Cotonou makes a detour through Nigeria. Lomé, in Togo, is the other route, via Burkina Faso. The choice is made with your freight forwarder.

How many cargo tracking notes are needed?

Two: Niger’s BESC and that of the transit country, Benin or Togo. Our 2023 shipment was covered by Niger’s BESC, with the transit notation on the bill of lading.

Can you combine several kinds of equipment in one container?

Yes. The June 2023 load combined cables, luminaires, wiring devices, pressure-boosting equipment and lightning and fire protection products.

Do you also ship by air?

Yes, for small volumes: we shipped by air from Tunis-Carthage airport in 2022.

Is a certificate of conformity required?

Niger introduced a certificate of conformity for regulated products in 2015, required for customs clearance. Check with your freight forwarder whether your products are covered: we attach the technical data sheets to our offer.
