Importing into Malawi from Tunisia: transit corridors, MBS checks and the COMESA area

MWB TRADING offers importers, distributors and companies in Malawi supplies from Tunisia: cables and electrical equipment, MV/LV transformers and substations, LED lighting, water pipes and fittings, and industrial raw materials. Goods leave from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax; our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival, on CFR or CIF terms, in full 20 or 40-foot containers or as groupage for small volumes.

LOGISTICS AND DOCUMENTS

Importing into Malawi through the transit corridors

Ports and routes

Malawi has no access to the sea. According to the Logistics Cluster, it relies mainly on the ports of Beira and Maputo, in Mozambique, and on Durban and Cape Town, in South Africa; Nacala, in Mozambique, and Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania, are also used. Nacala is the closest port to Blantyre and Lilongwe: a railway links it to the Malawian network, which also carries containers. From Radès or Sfax, containers travel with transhipment depending on the shipping line; transit to Malawi, by road or rail, is arranged with your freight forwarder.

Import documents

Customs come under the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), which processes declarations in the ASYCUDA World system. The file includes the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, plus the transit declaration when the goods cross Mozambique. Certain goods can only be imported with a permit from the Ministry of Industry and Trade under the Control of Goods Act: the list, reviewed regularly, includes cement and PVC pipes. A national single window, launched in 2025, is gradually connecting the agencies that issue licences and permits to the customs system.

Inspection and conformity

Imports covered by a compulsory Malawi standard must comply with it. The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) checks them under its imports quality monitoring scheme, with inspection, sampling and testing where needed, and authorises their clearance on a certificate of conformity issued per consignment or for the year. These checks are coordinated with customs in ASYCUDA World. Product data sheets and test reports make these procedures easier.

What to specify

State the delivery city in Malawi and the intended transit port, with the references, quantities and required standards. Specify whether your products need an import permit, whether several product families can share one container and whether you want a CFR, CIF or FOB offer. On payment, imports are usually settled by letter of credit: check the conditions with your bank before ordering.

Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Your questions about importing into Malawi from Tunisia

Which port should goods for Malawi go through?

Malawi has no access to the sea: goods arrive through a neighbouring country’s port, most often Beira or Durban, through Nacala, the closest, linked to Malawi by rail, or through Dar es Salaam. The choice depends on the delivery city and the shipping line’s port calls. Our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival, on CFR or CIF terms, from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax; the rest of the route is arranged with your freight forwarder.

Which conformity checks apply in Malawi?

Products covered by a compulsory Malawi standard must comply with it: the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) checks them and authorises their clearance on a certificate of conformity, per consignment or annual. For the shipment, MWB prepares the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and technical data sheets, which support these procedures.

Is an import permit required?

For certain goods, yes: the Ministry of Industry and Trade issues import permits under the Control of Goods Act. The list, reviewed regularly and published in the Government Gazette, includes cement, fertiliser and PVC pipes; a permit is valid for six months and can be extended. Check the current list with your freight forwarder before ordering.

Do Tunisian products benefit from a tariff preference?

Malawi and Tunisia both take part in the COMESA free trade area, which Tunisia declared itself ready to apply in 2020. With a COMESA certificate of origin, issued in Tunisia by customs or a chamber of commerce, products that meet the rules of origin can enter free of customs duty. Malawi also belongs to SADC, of which Tunisia is not a member, and has ratified the AfCFTA. Ask your freight forwarder to confirm that the preference applies before ordering.

Can you group several products or ship small quantities?

Yes: several product families can be grouped in the same 20 or 40-foot container, bringing your purchases together in a single transit to Malawi, and small volumes travel as groupage. For urgent needs in small quantities, air freight from Tunis-Carthage is possible on request.
