MWB TRADING offers importers, distributors and companies in Tanzania products from Tunisia: cables and power network equipment, LED lighting, water pipes and fittings, white cement and finishing products, and industrial raw materials. Importing through the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara
Ports and routes
From Tunisia, containers arrive, with transhipment depending on the shipping line, at Dar es Salaam, the country’s main port. Its Terminal 1 has been operated under concession by DP World since April 2024, and waiting times for vessels before berthing have fallen markedly since then. In the north, the port of Tanga has been deepened to 13 m and its berths upgraded; in the south, Mtwara has been expanded and serves the southern regions. Inland, the standard gauge railway has carried freight between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma since July 2025. Our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival; onward transport to the delivery city is arranged with your freight forwarder.
Import documents
The importer, holding a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), appoints a licensed clearing and forwarding agent. The agent lodges the declaration in TANCIS, the TRA customs system, normally at least 7 days before the goods arrive: the pre-arrival declaration shows the duties and taxes due before arrival and shortens clearance time. The file includes the final invoice, packing list, bill of lading, the agent’s authorisation letter, the import permits required for certain products and, for regulated products, the certificate of conformity; documents are in English. The system automatically rejects incomplete declarations or those with insufficient descriptions. TRA also runs the Tanzania Electronic Single Window System (TeSWS). MWB prepares the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and technical data sheets for the shipment.
Inspection and conformity
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) runs a Pre-Shipment Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme. Every consignment of regulated products must be covered by a certificate of conformity (CoC), issued before shipment by the body appointed by TBS for the exporting zone, through one of three routes: inspection and testing of the consignment, product registration or manufacturer licensing; the current contract covers 2025-2028. The certificate is valid for three months; the original is presented at clearance with the transport document, the invoice and the TRA assessment. In May 2025, TBS restated that regulated goods arriving without a certificate are subject to destination inspection and a penalty of 15% of their value; non-compliant goods are returned to their country of origin or destroyed at the importer’s expense. Operating instructions must be supplied in English or Swahili. Industrial raw materials can be exempted on application to TBS, but remain subject to destination inspection. Have each reference checked before shipment.
What to specify
State the preferred port of arrival, Dar es Salaam, Tanga or Mtwara, and the delivery city, with the references, quantities and required standards. Say whether several product families can share a container, whether you want a CFR, CIF or FOB offer, and who arranges transport after the port. Flag the products regulated by TBS, so that the certificate of conformity is obtained before loading.
Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

Your questions about importing into Tanzania from Tunisia
Is a certificate of conformity needed to ship to Tanzania?
Yes, for products regulated by TBS: every consignment must be covered by a certificate of conformity, issued before shipment by the body appointed for the exporting zone and valid for three months. Without one, the goods are inspected at destination and a penalty of 15% of their value applies. MWB prepares the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and technical data sheets for the shipment.
When must the customs declaration be lodged?
Before arrival: the licensed clearing and forwarding agent appointed by the importer lodges the declaration in TANCIS, normally at least 7 days before the goods arrive, so the duties and taxes are known in advance. Tanzania does not appear among the countries requiring an electronic cargo tracking note (BESC or ECTN) in the lists published in 2024 and 2026; have your freight forwarder confirm the procedure before loading.
Do Tunisian products qualify for a customs preference?
As a rule, plan on the EAC common external tariff, with four main rates: 0% for raw materials and capital goods, 10% for intermediate goods, 25% for finished goods and 35% for certain products; Tanzania-specific derogations are set every 1 July for certain products, such as ceramic tiles, plaster and steel in 2025-2026. Tanzania is not a COMESA member: a COMESA certificate of origin gives no reduction there, and its SADC preferences do not cover Tunisia. Tanzania and Tunisia have ratified the AfCFTA and issue AfCFTA certificates of origin, but the application of its rates to your products on entry into Tanzania is not established: have your freight forwarder check it before relying on it.
Which port should the goods go through?
Through Dar es Salaam, the country’s main port, or through Tanga, in the north, and Mtwara, in the south, depending on the services offered by shipping lines. Our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival, on CFR or CIF terms, from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax; FOB departure is possible on request.
Can you group several products or ship small quantities?
Yes: several product families can be grouped in the same 20 or 40-foot container, and small volumes travel as groupage. For urgent needs in small quantities, air freight from Tunis-Carthage is possible on request.
