Importing into Lesotho from Tunisia: via Durban, RSL customs and the SACU tariff
MWB TRADING offers importers, distributors and companies in Lesotho a range of products from Tunisia: cables and electrical equipment, transformers, LED lighting, as well as tiles, sanitaryware and taps. Goods leave from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax; our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival, on CFR or CIF terms, in full 20 or 40-foot containers or as groupage for small volumes.
Lesotho has no sea access: its imports arrive through South African ports, mainly Durban, and then reach the country by road or rail. This guide sets out the verified points for importing into Lesotho: the main border posts, registration with Revenue Services Lesotho and the customs declaration, import permits, the SACU common external tariff, possible preferences for Tunisian origin and what to state in your enquiry.

Lesotho has no sea access and relies on South African ports, mainly Durban, linked to the country by road and rail. From Tunisia, containers travel with transhipment depending on the shipping line; allow extra time for transhipment and transit. Maseru Bridge and Ficksburg Bridge are the busiest border posts between South Africa and Lesotho; in 2025, the customs administrations of both countries carried out a clearance time study there to streamline procedures. Our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival: transit through South Africa and the place of customs clearance are arranged with your freight forwarder.
Import documents
Importers register with Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) to obtain an importer’s code. The customs declaration, on the Single Administrative Document (SAD) form, is processed in RSL’s ASYCUDA World system. The file includes the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and, for restricted goods, an import permit issued by the Ministry of Trade or the Ministry of Agriculture depending on the product. RSL stresses accurate declaration of invoices and goods at border posts. MWB prepares the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and technical data sheets for the shipment.
Inspection and conformity
Lesotho takes a selective, risk-based approach: most imported products enter the market without testing, inspection or certification, while mandatory testing and certification apply to certain categories affecting public health, safety or the environment. The Lesotho Standards Institution develops national standards, and the country relies largely on South African standards. There is no specific labelling legislation: only country-of-origin labelling is required. Ask your freight forwarder to confirm whether your products fall into a controlled category.
What to specify
State the delivery location in Lesotho and the intended border post, with the references, quantities and standards required for each product. Flag any products that need an import permit or certification, so that documents can be prepared before shipment. Say whether several product families can share one container and whether you want a CFR, CIF or FOB offer.
Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

Your questions about importing into Lesotho from Tunisia
Which port do goods for Lesotho arrive through?
Through a South African port, usually Durban, from where they reach Lesotho by road or rail; Maseru Bridge and Ficksburg are the busiest border posts. Our offers are made delivered to the port of arrival, on CFR or CIF terms, from Radès (Tunis) or Sfax; transit through South Africa and customs clearance are arranged by your freight forwarder.
Which import formalities should I plan for?
Importers register with Revenue Services Lesotho to obtain an importer’s code; the customs declaration is processed in ASYCUDA World. It is supported by the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, with an import permit for restricted goods. Ask your freight forwarder to check whether your products need one.
Do my products need certification?
Only if they fall into a controlled category. Lesotho takes a selective approach: most imported products enter without testing or certification, while mandatory testing applies to certain categories related to health, safety or the environment. For labelling, only the country of origin is required; state the standard required for your project in your enquiry.
Do Tunisian products benefit from a tariff preference?
Lesotho applies the SACU common external tariff. As Tunisia is not a SADC member, SADC preferences do not apply. Lesotho and Tunisia are among the countries that have started implementing AfCFTA preferences, according to the South African trade ministry (October 2025): a duty reduction may therefore be possible for goods of Tunisian origin, with AfCFTA proof of origin. Ask your freight forwarder to confirm the applicable preference before ordering.
Can you group several products or ship small quantities?
Yes: several product families can be grouped in the same 20 or 40-foot container, and small volumes travel as groupage. For urgent needs in small quantities, air freight from Tunis-Carthage is available on request.
