LOGISTICS AND DOCUMENTS

Shipping to Ghana: ports and formalities

Ports and routes

Tema and Takoradi are the two seaports of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. Since 2021, most of our shipments for Burkina Faso have been discharged at Tema before continuing by road. For Ghana, containers leave from Radès or Sfax; the route, with or without transhipment, and the port of discharge are confirmed in each offer.

Import documents

Clearance runs on ICUMS, the Customs single window. The importer submits an import declaration form (IDF), which leads to a classification and valuation report (CCVR); the customs declaration is lodged by the importer or a licensed customs broker within seven working days of discharge. Documents are in English: commercial invoice showing FOB and CIF values, packing list, bill of lading, insurance certificate and the CCVR.

Inspection and conformity

The Ghana Standards Authority inspects high-risk goods at the port, including electrical cables, switches, sockets, bulbs, building materials and chemicals; importers register with GSA. Under the EasyPASS programme, regulated goods are checked before shipment by Bureau Veritas or Intertek, which issue a certificate of conformity used for customs clearance. Labels must be in English.

What to specify

Products and references, the standards and test certificates available, quantities, whether the importer is registered with GSA, the port of discharge, Tema or Takoradi, and the final delivery city.

Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Your questions about importing into Ghana

Do you know the port of Tema?

Yes. Since 2021, most of our shipments for Burkina Faso have been discharged at Tema, in containers, before continuing by road.

Which of your products are high-risk goods in Ghana?

GSA lists electrical cables, electrical products such as bulbs, switches and sockets, building materials and chemicals among high-risk goods. Each shipment needs a certificate of conformity or analysis and is inspected on arrival.

Who issues the EasyPASS certificate?

Bureau Veritas or Intertek, the two providers approved by the Ghana Standards Authority. They verify conformity before shipment and issue the certificate used for customs clearance.

Is a cargo tracking note required for Ghana?

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority has announced a cargo tracking note, the Smart Port Note, whose introduction has been postponed. Check its status with your freight forwarder before shipping.

Can the offer include delivery beyond the port?

The offer can stop at Tema or Takoradi, or include transport to your delivery city; say which you prefer. Feasibility and pricing of inland transport are assessed separately.
