Importing into Burkina Faso from Tunisia: the BESC and the Tema, Lomé and Abidjan corridors

MWB TRADING has been shipping regularly to Burkina Faso since 2021, from Sfax and Radès (Tunis): DECORMED plaster, white cement, electrical wires and cables, conduit and lighting for distributors and contractors in Burkina Faso. The containers mostly arrive at the port of Tema, in Ghana, less often at Lomé or Abidjan, then continue to Burkina Faso by road.

This guide sets out the key points for importing into landlocked Burkina Faso: the electronic cargo tracking note (BESC) of the Burkinabè Shippers’ Council, online formalities on the SYLVIE platform, the WAEMU common external tariff and the AES confederal levy, and what to state in your enquiry. Our public reports, from 2022 to 2026, show some of our loads, including an operation combining DECORMED plaster and conduit in August 2026.

LOGISTICS AND DOCUMENTS

Importing into Burkina Faso via Tema, Lomé or Abidjan

Ports and routes

Our shipments leave from Sfax or Radès (Tunis), mostly for the port of Tema, in Ghana, and less often for Lomé, in Togo, or Abidjan, in Côte d’Ivoire. The onward journey to Ouagadougou or another city is by road; from Abidjan, the corridor to Ouagadougou combines road and rail. Cotonou can also be assessed.

Loading formats

40-foot High Cube containers for bulky conduit and wires; 20-foot containers for most of the plaster and white cement. Several product families can share the same container.

Import documents

All cargo bound for Burkina Faso must be covered by an electronic cargo tracking note (BESC) validated by the Burkinabè Shippers’ Council or its agent: at least one for each ocean bill of lading or multimodal transport document. Some shipping lines require the transit documents, including the BESC, at least two weeks before the vessel arrives. The commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin complete the file, preferably in French; many formalities are handled online on the SYLVIE platform.

Inspection and conformity

The BESC number must appear on the customs declaration, and Customs check its validity at clearance. Goods are inspected on arrival, and electrical products must be tested and certified before they are sold: state in your enquiry the standards and certificates expected for cables, conduit and luminaires.

What to specify

Plaster or white cement references and quantities, wire and cable cross-sections and lengths, conduit coil diameters and lengths, luminaire quantities, final destination city and unloading location.

Availability, transport, lead times and documents are confirmed in each offer.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Your questions about importing into Burkina Faso from Tunisia

Which port do your shipments to Burkina Faso use?

Mostly Tema, in Ghana; less often Lomé, in Togo, or Abidjan, in Côte d’Ivoire. The goods then continue by road. Another transit port, such as Cotonou, can be assessed if you prefer.

Which cargo tracking note is needed for Burkina Faso?

An electronic cargo tracking note (BESC), validated by the Burkinabè Shippers’ Council or its agent, at least one per bill of lading. It must be ready before the vessel reaches the transit port, and its number appears on the customs declaration. Your freight forwarder confirms the current procedure.

Which duties apply in Burkina Faso?

The WAEMU common external tariff: Burkina Faso remains a WAEMU member after leaving ECOWAS, effective 29 January 2025. Following the decision of the AES heads of state of 28 March 2025, a confederal levy of 0.5% of the customs value is added for goods imported from non-AES countries such as Tunisia. Your customs broker confirms the rates for each product.

Can you combine plaster and electrical supplies?

Yes. In August 2026, DECORMED plaster and conduit were shipped together. White cement is also loaded with plaster and conduit, and wires with conduit or with plaster.

Who arranges transport between Tema and Burkina Faso?

In our documented operations, overland transport from Tema is arranged by the buyer or their freight forwarder. If you want the offer to include it, say so: feasibility and pricing are assessed separately.

Which conduit lengths do you offer?

Our shipments included 50 and 80-metre coils in 20, 25 and 32 mm diameters. Other lengths and diameters are subject to confirmation for each reference.
