Shipping to Mauritania: ports and formalities
Ports and routes
The Friendship Port in Nouakchott is the main gateway for Mauritania’s sea trade; a container terminal opened there in December 2021. In the north, the port of Nouadhibou mainly handles iron ore and fishing. Containers leave from Radès or Sfax; the route, with or without transhipment, is confirmed in each offer. For an urgent consignment, air freight from Tunis-Carthage is possible.
Import documents
The documents generally required are the commercial invoice, the bill of lading or air waybill and the certificate of origin; the packing list completes the file. For regulated goods, the PVCM certificate of conformity accompanies the consignment: it is required for customs clearance in Mauritania.
Inspection and conformity
Mauritania’s conformity verification programme (PVCM), set up by the ministry in charge of trade, has applied since 15 March 2023, based on the bill of lading date. It covers building materials, chemicals, electrical and electronic goods and machinery, among others. Verification takes place before shipment: document review, testing where needed and physical inspection, followed by the certificate of conformity. Exporters are advised not to ship before it is issued.
